What is in the spreadsheet

One row per person, sorted by surname. The columns are ID, given names, surname, full name, sex, birth date, birth place, death date, death place, parents, partners, children and notes.

Relatives are written as names, so you can filter for everyone born in one town, sort by birth year, or spot people with no dates at a glance. The file is saved as UTF-8 with a marker Excel recognises, so names with accents open correctly.

How to open a GEDCOM file in Excel

Excel cannot read a .ged file directly. Opening one shows a single column of codes like 1 BIRT and 2 DATE. Convert it to CSV first, then open that.

  1. Drop your .ged file on the converter above.
  2. Your browser saves a .csv file with the same name to your downloads.
  3. Double click the .csv file, or in Excel choose File, then Open. In Google Sheets choose File, then Import.

A spreadsheet is a report, not a tree

CSV is good for sorting, filtering and sharing a list. It cannot be turned back into a GEDCOM file with every relationship intact, so keep your original .ged file. To edit the tree itself and export a new GEDCOM, use the free GEDCOM editor.

GEDCOM to Excel questions

01How do I open a GEDCOM file in Excel?

Convert it to CSV first. Drop the .ged file on this page and a .csv file is saved to your downloads. Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers all open it with one row per person.

02Is my file uploaded to convert it?

No. The conversion happens in your own browser. The file is never sent to a server and nothing is kept after you close the tab.

03Why does my GEDCOM file look like code in Excel?

A GEDCOM file is plain text where every line is a level number, a tag and a value, such as 2 DATE 3 MAY 1950. Excel shows those lines as they are. Converting to CSV turns them into one tidy row per person.

04Can I convert the spreadsheet back to GEDCOM?

Not without losing detail, because a flat list cannot hold every family link. Keep your original .ged file, and use the GEDCOM editor if you need to change the tree.

05Is it free?

Yes. The GEDCOM to Excel converter is free, with no account and no file limit.
