What the web page looks like

Every person in your file gets their own entry with birth and death dates and places, parents, partners, children and any notes. Relatives are links, so you can click from a grandmother to her children and back.

An alphabetical index at the top lists everyone by surname. The page has no scripts and loads nothing from the internet, so it still works years from now, offline, on a USB stick or in an email attachment.

Convert GEDCOM to HTML in three steps

  1. Export a .ged file from your genealogy program or website. Ancestry, MyHeritage, Gramps, RootsMagic and Family Tree Maker all do this.
  2. Drop the file on the box above, or choose it with the button.
  3. Your browser saves the finished .html file to your downloads folder. Open it with a double click.

Put your family tree on the web

The file is a normal web page, so you can upload it to any web host, a Google Drive or Dropbox folder, or your own site. Before you publish it anywhere public, remove living relatives from your file first. A GEDCOM export usually includes everyone, including people who are still alive.

If you want a tree that family can explore without you hosting anything, open the file in the Kinleaf viewer instead and share a private link.

GEDCOM to HTML questions

01How do I convert a GEDCOM file to HTML?

Drop your .ged file on the converter at the top of this page. It is read in your browser and a single .html file is saved to your downloads. There is no signup and nothing to install.

02Is my GEDCOM file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your own browser tab. The file never leaves your device, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

03Can I put the HTML page on my website?

Yes. It is one self contained file with no scripts and no outside links, so any web host can serve it. Remove living people from the file before you publish it publicly.

04Which GEDCOM versions work?

GEDCOM 5.5 and 5.5.1 files saved as UTF-8 convert fully. Older ANSEL files convert too, but accented letters may look wrong. Run them through the GEDCOM validator to check.

05Is the GEDCOM to HTML converter free?

Yes. It is free with no account and no limit on how many files you convert.
