Kinleaf is a modern way to build, keep, and share a family tree in the browser. The whole product rests on one promise. The records you create here belong to you, and you can take them with you at any time.
The problem we kept running into
Most family tree apps make it easy to put your data in and hard to get it back out. Your family history slowly becomes something you rent. If you stop paying, or the company changes hands or shuts down, the tree you spent years building can end up locked behind a paywall or simply gone.
A family tree is not really software. It is a record of people. It should outlive any single app, including this one. That belief shaped every decision we made.
How Kinleaf is different
You can import an existing tree from a GEDCOM file or from Gramps XML, edit it from any phone or computer, and export the full archive whenever you like. Nothing is held hostage. Your tree stays private unless you decide to share a link, and even then you control exactly what a visitor can see.
Private by default
Every tree you make is private until you choose to share it. Public sharing is never automatic, and we do not sell your data or use your family records to train anything.
You can always leave
Export your whole archive as GEDCOM, JSON, PDF, or PNG whenever you want. Keep an offline backup. If you decide Kinleaf is not for you, you take everything with you.
Honest about what we do
We tell you what works today and what does not. Gramps XML import and export are live for your core tree. We do not claim features we have not built.
What Kinleaf is, and what it is not
Kinleaf is an online family tree you can open from any browser. It is not a replacement for a deep desktop program like Gramps, and it does not pretend to be. Gramps handles sources, citations, and research detail that a calm web app is not built for. Plenty of people use both and move their core tree between them. That is exactly the kind of freedom we want to support.
Who builds it
Kinleaf is made by a small independent team that cares about family history and dislikes vendor traps. We would rather ship one honest feature than a page of marketing promises. If you have a question or a request, we read every message.
