Your parent's brother is your uncle, and you're his nephew or niece. One step up, one step back down.
You and a second cousin share the same great-grandparents, but not the same grandparents. Cousins, one generation deeper.
"Removed" means a generation apart. Your first cousin's child is your first cousin once removed.

01How does the relationship calculator work?
You choose how many generations each person sits from a shared ancestor, and Kinleaf names the relationship in plain language, like niece or first cousin once removed, so you do not have to count generations by hand. It all runs in your browser.
02Which relationships can it work out?
Blood relationships that trace back to a shared ancestor: siblings and half siblings, aunts and uncles, and cousins with their removals, out to distant branches. It does not work out in-laws, step or adopted relationships, or anything from DNA.
03Do I need to build a family tree first?
No. The calculator needs nothing but the two distances you choose, so you can use it straight away. If you would rather keep your real family in one place, you can build a private tree on Kinleaf as well.
04Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us, stored, or tracked. And every Kinleaf tree is private by default.
